FareShare are seeking charities and not-for-profit organisations in Lincoln that have a need for free food. The food comes directly from local Tesco Express stores in the city.
The food offered:
- usually comprises breads, pastries, fruit, vegetables and canned items;
- has to be collected from the store of your choice (within the options FareShare have) on a designated day (and time);
- is classified as surplus food or is near its ‘use-by’ date.
FareShare also offer chilled food and meat products – which are used by organisations to cook meals, providing the recipient organisations have the usual EH and food hygiene credentials.
They do allow a fee to be charged for the food they provide – but the key is the “not for profit” element. So they usually insist on a limit of £4 for a meal that is made from the ingredients provided, and lesser amounts for individual breads, pastries, fruit, etc.
There really are no catches to the scheme – other than ensuring the organisations invited to take part are not-for-profit.
All participating organisations will need to sign a simple Agreement. They can opt out whenever they like, there are no tie-ins – and no cash whatsoever is involved!
