Gainsborough Community Wheels had cause for celebration in June after a recent win at the Gainsborough Standard Community Awards Annual celebration. The Gainsborough-based voluntary car scheme, which has only been in existence since summer 2014, was awarded the Community Spirit Award during the ceremony at Hemswell Court on June 9th, which was attended by more than 100 local people.
The voluntary car scheme was set up by dedicated volunteers to help local people get where they need to be at a very reasonable cost. Gainsborough voluntary transport volunteers, at the planning stage, sought assistance from Voluntary Centre Services (VCS) including advice regarding setting up, policies, and publicity, as well as funding. The VCS volunteer team helped with the development of new volunteer roles and with the recruiting of volunteers, including support with writing press releases and posting recruitment appeals through a variety of methods, including Facebook.
By September 2014, the voluntary car scheme was up and running and they received their first funding success from the local Community Chest Fund – a success which gave them the confidence to apply for further funding. By mid-October 2014, after only two months in operation, they had 26 clients and had carried out over 35 journeys.
Since then the scheme has gone from strength to strength culminating in this recent Community Spirit Award.
Gainsborough Community Wheels office is based in Gainsborough House and is manned on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10am to 3pm. If you live in Gainsborough or surrounding villages and would like to volunteer as a driver or join the scheme call 01427 611441 or email email@example.com.
Fares are charged based on mileage, £1 for the first mile and 45p each mile thereafter.
Well done Gainsborough Community Wheels – keep up the great work!
