Chef / Head Cook

30 hours per week. Hours are flexible. £9 per hour, plus bonus scheme.

We are looking for an experienced chef to bring excitement, inspiration and culinary leadership to our friendly community café, our food and our established team of brilliant volunteers.

The community cafe opened on Valentine’s Day in 2015 with the aim of creating affordable, comforting, home-made food, ‘prepared and served with love’ by a team of volunteers under our part-time café manager. We have a loyal customer base and a reputation for friendliness and good, straightforward food. We want to step-up the quality of the cooking on offer and inspire our volunteers to learn more about how to make and enjoy delicious and healthy food.

We need a candidate with excellent cooking, food hygiene and kitchen management skills and a thorough understanding of purchasing and stock control procedures. Obviously. But we also want our cook to be able to teach and inspire our volunteers to acquire new skills and to develop the potential of our café for the benefit of our community. You’ll need to be friendly, resilient, with great communication skills and an enthusiasm for supporting people to learn and grow through your passion for food.

Creativity is at the heart of our community project, so we’d love to know your ideas for making the most of our inspirational work space and stretching the skills of our volunteers: a wood-fired pizza oven and street-food bar maybe? Paella for eighty cooked over the fire-pit in our beautiful courtyard? A new micro-bakery business? How would you adapt our menus to make the most of donations from local supermarkets and food producers? We also have some of the most discerning customers in the world at our Children’s and Teenage Projects: how can you encourage them to eat better?

We are looking for an experienced candidate with minimum Level 2 NVQ in professional cookery or equivalent, preferably with an interest in bread-making, plus current food safety certificate at level 2. DBS check required.

A bonus scheme relating to performance is available and will be discussed at interview.


Job Description

  • Create menus using fresh, seasonal ingredients; including finding ways of preserving and using donated food creatively and economically.
  • Cook daily in the café or plan, supervise and support volunteers’ cooking to maintain quality and consistency.
  • Make bread for the café with volunteers.
  • Support and cook for special events.
  • Maintain food safety and hygiene procedures and paperwork.
  • Review and maintain purchasing/procurement procedures for maximum quality and value.
  • Review and maintain cost and stock control and storage procedures.
  • Manage and organise the kitchen and café space to make best use of space in a clean, tidy and appealing way.
  • Organise regular teaching sessions with volunteers or community members about food.
  • Find imaginative ways to engage volunteers and community members with good food practice and pleasure.
  • Generate and support food business ideas using volunteers.
  • Liaise with project manager and directors and attend occasional meetings as necessary.
